You can check in but you might not be able to check out

Some thrill-seekers get their kicks from rollercoasters. Others from sky diving, paragliding or bungee jumping. If you’re a thrill-seeker in search of a unique last-minute thing to do for spooky season, or year-round, try something chilling like spending the night in a haunted inn, or go on a spooky pub crawl or ghost tour.

US Ghost Adventures offers guests the ability to book a hotel stay at some of the scariest locations in the nation. The company was originally developed as an app.

“In 2013, Lance Zaal saw an opportunity to improve upon existing tour options by creating a self-guided tour app, Junket: Explore Your World,” Josef Kruger Vice President of Operations and Marketing said.  “This app allowed users to take tours at their own pace and on their own schedule, a unique feature developed nearly a decade before many companies would offer similar products during and after COVID. Initially, Lance aimed to list the app on platforms like TripAdvisor but faced a roadblock—these sites required a live, in-person component. So, he took matters into his own hands by becoming a tour guide himself and hiring additional guides to launch Austin Ghosts. Over time, he realized the potential of having local expert guides lead these ghost tours on-site, which set a strong foundation for the business.”

Some of the haunted hotels they manage include:

The Villisca Axe Murder House

Josiah Moore and his family purchased a quaint home in Villisca, Iowa in 1903. On the night of June 9, 1912, all six members of the Moore family as well as two guests were brutally murdered in a crime that remains unsolved to this day. All eight victims, which included six children, were bludgeoned to death with an axe.

Guests have reported strange phenomena throughout the house. You can select which room you’d like to stay in – the children’s room, the adult’s bedroom, the room that housed their guests or rent the entire home during your stay.

The house was meticulously restored in the 1990s to the original state from the time of the murders. The house lacks modern amenities such as plumbing and electricity. However, guests staying overnight do have access to bathroom facilities.

If you’re too afraid to stay overnight, you can book a day tour. Learn all about the tragic event and investigate the haunted surroundings.

The Lizzie Borden Home

Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her father 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, gave her mother 41. Sounds like a horrific nursery rhyme, but it’s a song born out of a gruesome murder. On August 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden allegedly murdered her stepmother and father with an axe or hatchet like weapon. Although acquitted at trial, her behavior in the days leading up to the murder and contradictory statements afterwards, left many believing she was guilty of the crime. During the investigation authorities conducted the autopsy of the bodies on the Borden’s dining room table and their heads were presented as evidence in the trial. Appropriately enough an overnight stay at the Lizzie Borden house includes a Continental Breakfast, if you can stomach it!

Pick which part of the three-story house you’d like to room in or rent the whole thing. This also has an option to visit during a day tour.

The Welty House

The Welty House played a part in the Battle of Gettysburg, the deadliest battle of the Civil War. More than 50,000 Union and Confederate soldiers perished in the battle and the Welty House was right at the center of the battle. It was used by the Confederates and after the war served as a temporary burial ground for 36 Union and Confederate soldiers. The vast mansion-like home has roughly 16 stately rooms to choose from, if you don’t mind sharing it with a ghost or two.

This location offers a variety of day and nighttime ghost tours of the Welty House and haunted Gettysburg locations and battlefields.

US Ghost Adventures also offers bookings for haunted pub crawls and ghost tours across the country. Ghost tours are offered in nearly every state. There are some here in Tennessee, in Memphis, Knoxville, Gatlinburg Nashville and here in Chattanooga. There are tours in nearby Georgia in Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah. Another is in nearby Birmingham, Alabama.

When you visit their website, you can select the city you want to visit, and it will open a viewer where you can select which tour you want to experience. They even have virtual tour options. You can watch previous professional tours or sign up to participate in a live tour from the comfort of your home.

The veteran operated business gives back to the community by offer scholarships.

“We continue to offer scholarships,” Kruger said. “Our primary goal is to engage young people and students by showcasing the many career opportunities in travel, tourism, and entertainment.”

Their website has a gift shop that sells items from each haunted inn, T-shirts, ghost hunting tools and novelty items.

“Our organization has received significant recognition, including being named among USA Today's Top 10 Most Haunted Hotels, Top 10 Most Haunted Destinations, and Top 10 Most Haunted Ghost Tours,” Rose said. “We've also been highlighted by Thrillist, AP, and other media as one of the Top Most Haunted Places.”
